Meetings Non-NEESPI Meetings of Interest
May 3-7, 2004 International Boreal Forest Research Association (IBFRA) 12th Annual Scientific Conference, Fairbanks, Alaska, USA
The Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystem (GCTE) of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and the Land Use and Land Cover (LUCC) Project announce that the "Land Project" will hold its first Open Science Conference 2-5 December, 2003 in Morelia, Mexico. The purpose of the conference is to bring together the research communities dealing with global change science related to land use/cover changes, terrestrial ecosystems, and aquatic ecosystems on land. The science plan and implementation strategy for the new Land project of IGBP and IHDP will be presented and discussed. There will be a preceding Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems (GCTE) symposium on 1 December. (See http://list.bren.ucsb.edu/pipermail/idgec-ipo/2003-July/000002.html for more information).
Description: Human conversion and modification of ecosystems to produce food and fiber, extract natural resources, and expand urban areas is one of the key modes of global change. Land use change, while essential for satisfying human needs, involves trade-offs with other ecosystem services and functions such as watershed protection, biogeochemical cycling, soil degradation, and habitats for other species. This session will consider studies addressing various aspects of ecosystem responses to land use change and the feedbacks to sustainable land use. Presentations can address the responses and feedbacks of ecosystems at a range of scales, from local to regional to global. The session will also provide opportunities for researchers working on different aspects of land use/land cover to share information on methodological approaches, observational strategies, and feedbacks among ecosystem processes. IGBP is currently developing the Integrated Land Ecosystem Atmosphere Processes Study (ILEAPS). This project is intended to become the Land/Atmosphere project of the next phase of IGBP, and will address interactions and teleconnections in the Land Biosphere - Atmosphere - Hydrosphere system. The ILEAPS Transition Team is organizing the Open Science Conference where the scientific community is invited to contribute to developing the Science Plan for ILEAPS. First information about the conference, including a draft background document describing the scope of the programme is now accessible at: http://www.atm.helsinki.fi/ILEAPS/ First call for papers for the workshop on: |
